rewrite this title Luxurious ‘Crescent Nob Hill’ Book

When your luxury residential building – featuring penthouses just shy of $6 million – offers sweeping views of San Francisco’s exclusive Nob Hill neighborhood, you need to provide potential residents with something a little more enticing than a brochure. Something that feels as substantial as the 8-story, Art Deco-influenced building itself.

Designed by Williams New York and produced by our friends at DataGraphic [projects / website], this 76-page (plus cover) hardback book for Crescent Nob Hill feels like a triumph of architecture all by itself. It demonstrates a level of precision that you don’t find in many books, and a few surprises, too.

Like the Crescent development it celebrates, the book’s cover – 120 pt. book board wrapped with Ecological Fibers Brillianta  – is low-key and tasteful, with the property’s logo magnified and Clear Foil debossed on the front.

That same logo is repeated as a pattern on the end leaf, printed with a custom varnish to create a subtle pattern. Inside, the uncoated 100 lb. Neenah Classic Crest Solar White Smooth Text [PaperSpecs PRO members: Get the Swatchbook] continues this message of simple elegance.

Printed Offset CMYK + 2 PMS colors, the book is beautifully designed, featuring large photographs of the residences and San Francisco surroundings that are every bit as airy as the apartments they promote. The Smyth-sewn binding not only ensures that the book lays flat and will stand up to repeated openings, but it also guarantees perfectly aligned, gutter-free cross-over spreads, which are crucial for helping the photographs get across the spaciousness of the individual apartments.

Not satisfied with spreads alone, the designers have taken it one step further with a trifold that opens up to offer an even more panoramic view of a staged apartment. This is even more impressive when you consider that the folded pages have to be slightly shorter than those surrounding it so as not to be cut off during the trimming process.

This comes up once more with a large, impressive gatefold map of Nob Hill and its surroundings, complete with line illustrations of local landmarks on its fold-out panels.

And if a prospective buyer somehow manages to miss the opening chapter about the venerable architecture firm that designed the property, they will find a 12-page, pocket-size “look book” of other buildings they’ve designed glued into the binding of the larger volume. So precise is this tip in, it seems to sit snuggly in the larger book’s gutter. Oh, and did I mention the ribbon bookmark for the mini book?

Like the rare San Francisco views and Art Deco accents offered by the apartments featured, this book is a lovely reminder that it’s the little extras that make the difference between “good enough” and the truly luxurious.
